The video feed flickered onto his secondary monitor. Robert Vance appeared on screen, sitting in what looked exactly like his home office. The lighting was slightly dim, the background shelves holding familiar golf trophies and family photos.

"Sarah, thank goodness you're there," the digital Vance said, his voice carrying the familiar gravelly, authoritative tone David had heard in dozens of board meetings. Simultaneously, David’s fingers flew across his mechanical keyboard, initiating a hard isolation protocol. "Aegis, lock down Robert Vance's corporate credentials across all networks. Terminate all active sessions. Revoke API tokens."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "No. I'm in a hotel room in Chicago, asleep. What happened?"

 

"Advanced social engineering attempt," David explained, watching the security console clean up the remaining digital traces of the attack. "They compromised an edge credential, mimicked your writing style over chat, and generated a real-time deepfake video call to pressure treasury into a manual override. The security tech flagged the audio synthesis and jawline artifacts before the funds could leave the perimeter."

 

Vance let out a heavy breath over the phone. "Fifty-four million?"

 

"Fifty-four million," David confirmed. "The network is locked down, your credentials are being reset as we speak, and we're hunting the initial entry point. You're safe."

 

"Good work, David. Bring the system back up when you're certain it's clean."

"Will do, sir. Get some rest."

 

David hung up the phone and looked back at his screens. The amber alerts had faded back to an orderly, resting green. The threat had been absolute, sophisticated, and entirely industrial to the untrained eye. But the machine learning algorithms had looked past the flawless digital mask and caught the invisible mathematical seams.

 

He took a sip of his lukewarm coffee, leaned back in his chair, and watched the quiet monitors.
